The simplest identification route
Bring at least one current document issued by a federal, state, or federally or state-recognized tribal government agency that bears your photograph and either your signature or a physical description. That matches North Carolina's statutory definition of satisfactory documentary evidence.
What if your ID is expired or unavailable?
North Carolina also recognizes a credible-witness method, but it is narrow: the credible witness must personally know you and must be personally known to the notary. A friend who is unknown to the notary does not automatically solve an ID problem. Call ahead before relying on this method, and do not send sensitive identity documents electronically.
Why the notary may still ask questions
Identity is only one part of the notary's job. The notary also has to consider the requested act, personal appearance where required, willingness, awareness, the document, and any conflict that would disqualify the notary.
