Prepare before you leave

What to bring for a notary visit

A little preparation prevents most wasted trips. Bring the complete document, identification, every required signer, and any witnesses your document requires.

In-store notary fee$10per notarized principal signature
Witness service$5per witness signature, when available
01

Your complete document

Bring every required page. The notary should not be asked to fill in legal content or choose a legal form for you.

02

Qualifying current photo ID

For the simplest visit, bring current government-issued photo identification that meets North Carolina's identity rules. If your ID is expired, unusual, damaged, or unavailable, call before you visit.

03

Every required signer

A person whose signature must be notarized generally needs to participate in the notarial act and satisfy the applicable identification and presence requirements.

04

Required witnesses

If your document calls for witnesses, bring them or call ahead to ask whether an eligible witness is available at the store for the $5 witness service.

05

Instructions from the recipient

If a court, bank, title company, school, agency, or other recipient has special instructions, bring them with you.

06

Questions before signing

Some acts require signing in the notary's presence. If you are unsure whether to sign before arriving, call first rather than guessing.
