From call to completed certificate
A simple walk-in notary visit
Most straightforward visits are simple when the document is complete, the signer has acceptable identification, and everyone knows which notarial act is required.
- 1
Call ahead
Confirm a commissioned notary is available and mention any witness requirement.
- 2
Bring your document and ID
Bring the complete record, qualifying current government photo identification, and all required signers. If you cannot use ordinary photo ID, call before relying on an alternative identity method.
- 3
The notary reviews the request
The commissioned notary checks the requested act, document, identity, presence, willingness, awareness, and any disqualifying conflict.
- 4
Complete the required signing or acknowledgment
What happens next depends on the notarial act. Some signatures are made in front of the notary; an acknowledgment can involve acknowledging an existing signature.
- 5
The notarial certificate is completed
If the act can proceed, the notary completes the certificate, signs, dates, and applies the official seal as required.
- 6
Handle the next step in the same store
If needed, make copies, print another page, fax the paperwork, or ship it to its destination.
