A document witness and a notary have different roles
A document witness signs in the witness role required by the record. The notary performs the requested notarial act. Do not assume a notary's signature also fills a separate witness line, or that a witness's signature replaces notarization.
North Carolina distinguishes a subscribing witness from a credible witness used to establish someone's identity. These terms describe different responsibilities. Check who can be your document witness
Read the recipient's instructions before choosing someone. Your form may have restrictions involving a witness's relationship to the signer, involvement in the transaction, or other qualifications. A relative, friend, or store employee is not automatically eligible simply because they are available.
For example, North Carolina's statutory health care power-of-attorney form calls for two qualified witnesses and a notary, with specific witness qualifications stated in the form. What to confirm when you call
- The document name and how many witness signatures its instructions require.
- Any stated witness qualifications or restrictions.
- Whether you are bringing your own eligible witnesses or asking about store-witness availability.
- How many people need notarized signatures and whether the instructions call for everyone to sign together.
You may bring your own witnesses who meet the document's requirements. Share the instructions with them beforehand, and bring everyone needed for the signing. We cannot choose a legal form, resolve unclear legal requirements, or guarantee a particular witness will qualify. Ask the recipient or an attorney when those instructions are unclear.
Witness pricing is separate from notarization
Our optional store witness service is $5 per witness signature when an eligible witness is available. This is a separate store-service charge, not a North Carolina notary fee. A witness does not automatically replace photo ID
Bring qualifying current government-issued photo ID. The narrow credible-witness identification method requires someone who personally knows you and is personally known to the notary; other statutory qualifications also apply.
