Does the DMV have a notary?
NCDMV and license plate agencies handle the title transaction itself. Whether a particular agency also offers notary service varies, so contact the agency to confirm. You can also get the title or MVR-1 notarized first at our walk-in store, open 7 days and until 8pm on weekdays (call ahead to confirm a notary is available), and then take it to the agency.

Does a North Carolina car title need a notary?
For a transfer involving an original North Carolina title, NCDMV requires the title to be completed and notarized. The original owner and recipient must supply the required transfer information. For an out-of-state title, NCDMV follows the issuing state’s requirements; do not assume every title uses the same signing process.

Is a DMV notary the same as a storefront notary?
A license plate agency handles vehicle title and registration transactions. NCDMV also lists notary fees for title and license paperwork; contact your chosen agency to confirm its services. Charlotte Notary provides in-store notarization at The UPS Store #2181. We are not a DMV office or license plate agency and do not issue titles, plates, or registration.
If you already have the correct title or form, our commissioned notary can review the requested notarization. You still submit the completed paperwork through the appropriate NCDMV process. Notarization alone does not complete or guarantee approval of a title transfer.

Which DMV forms may need notarization?
NCDMV’s document checklist marks the Title Application (MVR-1) and vehicle title as requiring notarization in common transactions. A duplicate-title request uses a different form, MVR-4, which NCDMV also requires to be notarized. Use the official checklist for your transaction; not every supporting document needs a notary.

What to bring for a title-related notary visit
- The original title or complete DMV form requiring notarization, with all required pages
- Qualifying current government-issued photo ID for each person whose signature must be notarized
- Every signer who must personally appear for the requested notarial act
- Any supporting paperwork NCDMV says your specific transaction requires
A photocopy of another owner’s ID does not replace that signer’s required personal appearance before a notary. For co-owned vehicles, NCDMV has additional signature and ID-copy requirements. Do not guess where or how to sign
Wait to sign until the notary directs you. If a title is already signed, mention that when you call. If it contains an error, ask NCDMV or the agency handling the transaction what is needed before changing it. Our notary cannot choose legal forms, correct ownership disputes, or provide legal advice.
